What is IES Exam

The IES Examination (Indian Engineering Services) is a competitive examination conducted by The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. It is also known as the Engineering Services Examination (ESE). The IES exam is Held annually to recruit engineers for various technical posts in government departments and organizations of the Indian government.

The primary purpose of the IES exam is to select candidates for engineering positions in sectors like civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and electronics and telecommunications engineering. These positions are primarily in government departments such as the Indian Railways, Central Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering, Indian Defense Service of Engineers, Central Power Engineering Service, And More.

The IES exam is conduct in three stages:

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Objective Type):

General Studies and Engineering Aptitude
Engineering Discipline-specific paper (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, and Telecommunication Engineering)

Stage 2: Main Examination (Conventional Type):

Engineering Discipline-specific papers (two papers)

Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)

The exam syllabus for each engineering discipline covers a wide range of topics related to the respective field of Engineering. The examination is known for its high level of technical difficulty and requires in-depth knowledge, problem-solving skills, and conceptual understanding.

Eligibility Criteria of the IES Exam

The eligibility criteria for the IES Examination (Indian Engineering Services) exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India, are as follows:

Nationality: The candidate must be either:

a) a citizen of India, or
b) a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or
c) a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of settling permanently in India, or
d) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the  United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of settling permanently in India.

Age Limit : The candidate must be between 21 and 30 Years age as of January 1 of the examination year. There are age relaxations available for Certain categories as per government rules.

Educational Qualification: The candidate must have one of the following Educational qualifications:
a) A degree in Engineering from a recognized university or institution.
b) A passed sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India).
c) A degree/diploma in Engineering from foreign universities or institutions that are recognized by the Government of India.

Medical Standards: The candidate must meet the medical standards as specified by the UPSC. These standards are outlined in the examination notification and generally involve Criteria related to vision, physical fitness, and general health.

It is important to note that the eligibility criteria mentioned above is based on the general guidelines, and specific details and requirements may vary from year to year.
